I have an few years old Zoom G5n (ver 2.0) and a very up-to date Ubuntu Linux box. I installed ToneLib-Zoom and it comes up and looks great. However, it cannot connect to the Zoom G5n. Get an error box stating 'Error: Unable to read "Zoom G5n" presets. There are no other indications. Is there an option to turn on a debug log?

The Zoom G5 is connected as the message from /var/log/syslog is below. After I connect the Zoom G5n I can get the sound from it and play my guitar through the computer and use it through OBS Studio. The point I am making here is that the USB connection is working and the Zoom is connected, just not to ToneLib-Zoom.

I have also downloaded the ToneLib-Zoom-Win64.msi and installed it using "wine". Although, this version is stupendously visually hideous, it has the same result. It comes up with the same error window.

Anybody notice this before or have any work arounds?

    Thanks!

The /var/log/syslog when I plug the USB cable into the Zoom G5n:

I will reply to my own post since I figured it out.
My firmware was at v2.0, which I thought may be the problem. And what the hell, newer is better, eh?

So, I downloaded the Firmware Updater for Windows and tried to run it under Wine. Started the Zoom G5n in update mode by turning it off, turning it on with the left two patch buttons down. Then I hit the execute button on the updater.
It got to "Erasing Flash Memory", and stopped after that, timing out. At this point the Zoom G5n is bricked! System Error on startup.

I finally installed a Windows 10 system on my Virtual Box. I needed some system tweeks to get it to see the USB from the host system. This involved installing a VBox extension package for dealing with USB over 1.0 . I followed this procedure:
    https://www.linuxbabe.com/virtualbox/access-usb-from-virtualbox-guest-os
I needed to be in the vboxusers group from login. So I issued the following command:
    sudo gpasswd -a <yourusername> vboxusers
This process involved me rebooting the host Linux, because I needed to be in the vboxusers group from login.
So, I also updated my linux box in the process.

From there, I restarted the Zoom G5 in update mode. So far, so good. Ready for update. So it was not totally bricked. I ran the Zoom G5 firmware updater under VirtualBox/Windows10 and it worked.

I cycled the power on the Zoom G5n and it came up in regular mode citing v3.0 firmware.
I then started ToneLib-Zoom under Linux, and it came up.

I have not played with it yet, but I am sure that if I can get USB access to it, it should be okay. I am currently updating the effects!

Only one thing, is that I have a multi-screen setup from my laptop with 2 screens to the right of the main Laptop screen. The ToneLib-Zoom GUI comes up in the display screen I start it in, but any of the Pop-up boxes that are modal, such as the Error Alerts and the Update progress window are restricted to the main Laptop screen. I cannot even move them to the other screens since these modals will not venture past the Laptop screen boarders. No big deal, but annoying.

Also, I just noticed that the tooltips for the main GUI come up in the Laptop Main screen regardless of which screen the ToneLib-Zoom GUI is on.

Hope this post helps anybody looking at this procedure.
    Linux Rules!
    Cheers,
